Serve at the heart of Mass

These ministries are directly involved in the sacred parts of the Mass and help create a reverent, prayerful experience for everyone attending. Support what happens at the altar and in church during worship. Special Note: EMHCs are selected by the Pastor and must be an adult, fully initiated and practicing Catholic in good standing.

  • Boys and girls from grades 4 and up are invited to serve at the altar. After a training, altar servers serve at all Saturday/Sunday Masses, Holy Days, and Masses during the Christmas and Easter Seasons. Masses on Holy Days and special services, including weddings and funerals, are on a volunteer basis.

The primary role of the altar server is to assist the priest and deacon in the celebration of the liturgy at Mass. This is done through specific actions and by setting an example to the congregation through active participation in the liturgy. The altar server’s duties at Mass include participating in singing of hymns, responding in prayer along with the people and looking alert while maintaining the proper posture (sitting, standing or kneeling) at the appropriate times. By assisting at the Altar, you help the priest concentrate on the Mass and lead people in worship of God. As you help the priest, you also help our parishioners to worship by your example and reverence. By serving as a minister of the Altar, you do a service for God and His Church.

Please email Director of Religious Education, Jim King at jking@sbgparish.org, if your son or daughter would like to join the Altar Servers Ministry.

Altar server training sessions will be announced from time to time. Please review the following training materials with your child before attending an altar server training session:

  • Children’s Liturgy of the Word offers children an opportunity to hear the Gospel at their level, typically during the 8:45 am Mass. The sessions feature age-appropriate scripture discussions, allowing young disciples to engage with the Word of God.

Please email Director of Religious Education, Jim King at jking@sbgparish.org for more information.

  • All parishioners are invited to become part of the Church Decorating Team—a beautiful ministry dedicated to bringing the sacred space of our church to life. With a focus on both reverence and tradition, this team plays a meaningful role in creating an atmosphere that uplifts hearts and enhances the worship experience for all who enter.

The team transforms the church throughout the liturgical year, especially during the most cherished seasons—Advent and Christmas, Lent and Easter—as well as for special celebrations like First Communion and Confirmation. Their work helps reflect the joy, solemnity, and beauty of each occasion, making every Mass feel even more special and spiritually enriching.

This is a wonderful opportunity to share your gifts, build community, and contribute to something truly inspiring. Come be part of a team that helps set the tone for worship.

Please email Joann McCracken at mccrackenjoannb@gmail.com, if you’d like to be part of a team that brings the beauty of our faith to life.

  • EMHCs are a vital part of our Parish Ministries. EMHCs serve at all of the Saturday/Sunday Masses, Holy Days, and Masses during the Christmas and Easter Seasons. Masses on Holy Days and special services are on a volunteer basis. EMHCs also bring Communion to the homebound and those in local nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

EMHCs are selected by the pastor and must be adult, fully-initiated practicing Catholics in good standing.

  • If you are an adult and have a desire to share God’s Word, this ministry may be a wonderful fit for you. Lectors are called to help bring Scripture to life and are a vital and inspiring part of our Parish Ministries. This ministry offers a unique and meaningful way to serve—standing at the heart of the Mass and sharing the message in a manner that is clear and draws the listener into the mystery of God’s plan for salvation for us all.

Lectors serve at all weekend Masses, Holy Days, and throughout the beautiful seasons of Christmas and Easter. Typically, you would serve one Saturday or Sunday per month, with additional opportunities for Holy Days and special services available on a volunteer basis. We understand that life is busy, and we are happy to work with your schedule to make this ministry both manageable and fulfilling.

Whether you have experience speaking in front of others or feel a gentle nudge to step forward and grow, you’ll be supported every step of the way. Serving as a lector is not just about reading—it’s about proclaiming, connecting, and helping others encounter God through His Word. Come be part of something truly meaningful.

Please email Mike Bryson at michaelbryson@comcast.net if you would like to proclaim the Word of God.

  • The Music Ministry at St. Basil’s is rooted in musical worship, gratitude, and participation. Whether you sing or enjoy playing an instrument, there is a place for you here. Our parish is blessed with two choirs—a Vocal Choir and a Handbell Choir—both of which enrich our liturgies and help create a spirit-filled, prayerful atmosphere.

Our choirs currently serve from early September through June, and we are excited to grow. We are actively welcoming new members to our Adult Vocal Choir as we expand musical worship to additional Masses. No matter your level of experience, if you have a willing heart and a desire to participate, you will be supported and encouraged. Rehearsals are held weekly at the church:

    • Handbell Choir: Wednesdays at 5:45 PM (1 hour)

    • Adult Vocal Choir: Wednesdays at 7:00 PM (1 hour)

Please email Lisa Vorel at StBasilMusic@yahoo.com if you would like to share your talents.

  • If you are an adult and are looking for a meaningful way to serve with purpose and quiet devotion, we warmly invite you to join us. The Sacristy is where the sacred items needed during liturgical celebrations are kept. This ministry is especially beautiful for those who feel called to serve in a more reflective and peaceful way. Through these simple but important acts of care, sacristans often find their own faith deepening and their relationship with the Lord growing stronger.

Sacristans thoughtfully prepare everything needed before Mass—ensuring that the altar, vessels, and sacred items are ready—and lovingly tidy and restore the space afterward. While much of this work happens out of sight, it plays an essential role in creating a reverent and prayerful experience for the entire parish.

To support the Mass behind the scenes, please email Kevin Savidge at kms32854@gmail.com.

  • All men and women are invited to be a part of a ministry rooted in hospitality, service, and care for the parish community. As an Usher, you are often the first friendly face people encounter when they arrive for Mass, helping to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels at home.

Ushers assist with collections, help guide parishioners during Holy Communion, support those who may need disability seating, and distribute bulletins at the end of Mass. With a focus on collections, communion, and bulletins, ushers quietly and faithfully serve behind the scenes while making a big impact on the experience of every parishioner. Ushers serve at all weekend Masses and are also invited to assist during special occasions throughout the year.

Please email Bill Jennings at wjenn71551@aol.com to be part of a ministry that helps every person feel seen and welcomed.
